Tiesj Benoot heading to Team Sunweb next season

Young Belgian Classics rider formerly linked to Team Ineos will instead leave Lotto-Soudal to bolster Team Sunweb

Winner of the 2018 Strade Bianche, Tiesj Benoot is off to Team Sunweb as the 25-year-old Lotto–Soudal rider is heading to the German squad on a two-year deal. Although Benoot has failed to gain a result as big as his previous win in Tuscany this season, he’s consistently performed at races including the Tour de Suisse, Dwars door Vlaanderen and Tour of Flanders.

Despite having started his career with Lotto-Soudal back in 2014, Benoot has been reported as keen to leave since earlier this season.

With his stock rising, it seems Lotto–Soudal struggled to match the salary he was being offered elsewhere, with the deep-pocketed Team Ineos apparently among those expressing interest.

However, instead of helping them hunt down their first Cobbled Classic, he’ll be taking up a starring role at Team Sunweb. With the squad reportedly struggling to retain the services of its star Tom Dumoulin, the exact role he’ll fill has yet to be seen.

Given his strong Grand Tour performances, Benoot could easily fall into a domestique role alongside being sent out hunting in the early-season races.
