Dan Martin will leave UAE Team Emirates at the end of the season and his move could indicate the ambitions of his new team

Daniel Martin will leave UAE Team Emirates at the end of this season to join the Israel Cycling Academy on a two-year contract. Martin will be looking to take sole leadership at his new team after often finding himself forced to share duties within his current squad.

The rider will also be hoping to recapture the form that in the past has seen him win Monuments and liven up Grand Tour stages.

The secondary element to this announcement could be an indication of the team's wider ambitions. Stories have cropped up in the past about Israel Cycling Academy's desire to enter cycling's WorldTour, with mergers and licence buy-outs mooted in the previously.

However, a big name transfer doesn't always lead to a divisional promotion for teams as Arkea-Samsic's signing of Warren Barguil and Andre Greipel along with Niki Terpstra's move to Total Direct Energie all show.

Martin's form has been a long way from the results he's gained in the past, in particular the 2013 and 2014 seasons, a period in which he won Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Il Lombardia and a stage of the Tour de France.

At the 2019 Tour he could only muster 18th overall following three consecutive top 10 overall finishes in previous seasons. Even so, at 32 years old and with the impetus of a new team the coming season could see him return to the top in the Ardennes and mountains.
