British Cycling announces long lists for Road World Championships

Gerraint Thomas and Barnes sisters in the frame, as longlists for each event released ahead of the races in Harrogate this September

The British riders in contention to race at the 2019 UCI Road World Championships have been revealed. The long lists for each of the events taking place in Yorkshire from the 22nd to 29th September have been announced by national governing body, British Cycling.

Of those in with a shout, Geraint Thomas might be the most high-profile, but Simon Yates is the bookies' choice to challenge favourite Mathieu van der Poel on the hilly road race course.

Despite a wealth of British WorldTour riders, perhaps the most favoured to win a World Champs title is Tom Pidcock, although he’ll be competing in the under-23 race.

In the women’s road race, both Barnes sisters get a mention, with double National Champion Alice looking to add the rainbow stripes to her two current British jerseys. Both sisters are listed in the time trial and road races.

'To compete in a home Road World Championship event is an opportunity which is likely to only happen once in a riders’ career,' said British Cycling Performance Director Stephen Park.
