Welshmen signs contract while riding his first Grand Tour

Team Ineos rider Owain Doull has put pen to paper on a two year contract extension, tying him to Britain’s most successful cycling team into 2021. The Welsh rider, who is currently in Spain competing in his first Grand Tour, has enjoyed his strongest year on the road to date in 2019.

In February he rode to his first professional win at the Herald Sun Tour, before getting a podium spot at Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne during the Classics season.

'Progression is probably the key word for me,' the 26-year-old said. 'I want to carry on learning from the best people in the best team in the world.

‘My first year with the team was up and down, the second was better, and then this year has surpassed my expectations, to be honest. Starting my first Grand Tour is something I have wanted to do since I joined the team.'

His debut Grand Tour may not have gone exactly to the team’s plan however, with joint leaders Tao Geoghegan Hart and Wout Poels inexplicably hemorrhaging time to their GC rivals on the road opening stage.

Though things have since improved for the pair, team pursuit gold medallist Doull was only able to manage 31st on yesterday’s ITT stage, something Team Ineos have chalked up to a deliberate attempt to conserve energy.
