Wahoo acquires high-end pedal brand Speedplay

Further expansion for the American brand best known for its turbo trainers

Wahoo has announced the purchase of pedal brand Speedplay as the American brand expands further into the cycling market. Wahoo, which is best known for its turbo trainers and bike computers, announced the acquisition on Tuesday afternoon, underlining its ambition of 'putting Speedplay pedals on as many bicycles as possible'.

Founded in 1989, Speedplay has long been known as the high-end double-sided pedal of choice for top athletes such as Bradley Wiggins and Peter Sagan. The innovative brand was also known for its price, with the Speedplay pedals and cleats far outweighing the price of major competitors Shimano and Look.

The acquisition will now see the once-niche pedal brand come under the roof of one of cycling's fastest-growing brands. Wahoo had already purchased training app 'The Sufferfest' earlier in the year, adding it to its existing reach in the indoor training and cycling GPS markets.

CEO of Wahoo, Chip Hawkins, believes that adding Speedplay to the Wahoo portfolio will complement the brand's growth and aid its pursuit for further technological advancements in cycling.

'Wahoo and Speedplay share a common approach of leveraging technology to develop products that enhance the performance of cyclists. Speedplay pedals are the most innovative, high-performance pedals available so it’s a perfect fit with Wahoo,' said Hawkins.
