Primoz Roglic unleashes pointless sprint finish in World Champs TT

Anyone who saw Primoz Roglic’s recent win at the Vuelta a Espana knows he’s long since shaken off his reputation for simply following other riders' wheels. It was partly these heroic efforts that had left the noted time triallist a longshot in the 2019 World Championship individual time trial.

Still appearing a little fatigued, the Slovenian rider was nevertheless able to finish a decent 12th. However, seemingly determined to put in an equally combative performance to the one he managed in Spain, he might yet find himself in trouble for having briefly hitched a ride behind the day's winner, Rohan Dennis.

The last man to set off, the unstoppable Dennis swept up those ahead of him. This included his three-minute man, who came in the form of Roglic. The Slovene hovered around behind Dennis for the rest of the route, something he may yet receive a sanction for.

Then, rather than pulling over to avoid his slipstream as required, Roglic instead appeared to hitch himself to Dennis’s rear wheel in the closing kilometre.

Worse still and perhaps a bit cheeky, yet maybe understandable at the end of a 54 kilometre slog-fest, Roglic then further risked the wrath of the adjudicators by trying to out-sprint Dennis as the latter approached the finish line and began to celebrate his victory.

Seeming to have escaped any censure for photobombing the images of Dennis crossing the line, we’re going to award Roglic an extra prize for the day's most - unnecessarily - combative rider.
