Check out the 'first' sub-£1000 e-road bike

Halfords' in-house brand Carerra launches its £999 Crossroad e-road bike

Halfords' in-house bike brand Carrera has released its £999 Crossroad Electric which it believes to be the 'cheapest e-road bike in Europe'. Available to buy from Halfords and Cycle Republic, the new Carrera Crossroad Electric integrates a 310wh battery with a Suntour electric motor system into the bike's rear wheel that provides a claimed 40 miles range on one charge.

Halfords will also offer a bigger 418w battery as an additional purchase if longer range is something your desire, too.

The motor is engaged by a crank-based torque sensor for a more responsive feel, unlike the cadence sensors usually found in lower-priced e-bikes.

For the money, you get a Crossroad aluminium frame that's fitted with a 9-speed Shimano groupset and Tektra MD-C400 mechanical disc brakes. The front rotor is also a large 180mm providing additional stopping power.

To increase comfort, this bike comes with a set of 32mm Kenda Kwick Trax clincher tyres, a perfect choice for commuters. There is also the capability to attach mudguards via mounts on the rear of the bike too.

Weight-wise, the full bike comes in at 19.5kg (size medium), which while around 10kg heavier than the lightest e-road bikes is still fairly respectable when you consider cost.

While this may not be a top-spec bike, it proves that e-road bikes are becoming more and more affordable for the consumer and that with this sub-£1000 option, we are likely to see big bike brands following suit.

The Carrera Crossroads e-road bike is available to buy from Halfords now here.
