Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands won his third consecutive title at the European Cyclocross Championships ahead of his long-time rival Eli Iserbyt. The Belgian ran him close on the muddy Italian course, with Van der Poel winning by just three seconds after a final-lap showdown.

Having previously won the Under-23 and Junior editions, this year Brit Tom Pidcock made his debut in the Elite category. Eventually finishing eighth, following the race Pidcock took a less than enthusiastic appraisal of his result, stating his aim to be back on the podium as soon as possible.

Better news for British fans came in the women’s U23 event. Anna Kay took the silver medal behind the Dutch rider Ceylin Del Carmen Alvarado.

In the Elite Women’s race, Yara Kastelijn took an emphatic win. Despite having stepped up from the U23 category, the 22-year-old took the lead from the start and never looked in danger of giving it up.

With few riders outside of Europe likey to threaten at the upcoming World Championships to be held in early February next year in Dübendorf, Switzerland, the race provides an early indication of who might be in contention for the rainbow bands.
