Sportive Breaks promises to collate all the best hotels for cyclists centred around European sportives.

We get lots of emails here at Cyclist and, once all the floods of praise are out of the way, the next most popular email we receive is asking for recommendations for sportives and hotels. While we love to be thought of as cycling’s Michelin guide, we’ve not ridden them all and we certainly can’t help you with entry. Thankfully though, Sportive Breaks has come along and it can.

Sportive Breaks launched just before Christmas to cater for the growing number of UK cyclists that ride sportives all over Europe. As these sportives become steadily more popular, gaining an entry is now a task all in itself. Last year, Italy’s most popular sportive, Nove Colli, sold all 13,000 of its spaces in just four minutes. Hotels at the Etape had booked up before the route was formally announced.

‘There is nothing better than a weekend away in Europe riding a top sportive with a group of friends,’ says Phil Sears, co-founder of Sportive Breaks. ‘But for years cyclists have had to put up with bad hotels and complicated logistics plans involving leaving cars in multiple places just because they had not booked everything within five seconds of the sportive being announced.’

Sears himself is all too familiar with the trauma of travelling with bikes, and it was having his bikes stolen ahead of a Belgian sportive (thanks to the hotel having no storage) that pushed him to start the company.

Sportive Breaks visits the host towns for each top sportive and finds the best hotels for cyclists, then rates it through its own 16 point system. Sportive Breaks is also an official partner with many of the top sportive organizers, so is sometimes able to offer tickets to events marked as sold out.

‘Our aim is to make cycling travel easy,’ says Sears. ‘Cyclists can book their hotels and entries with us knowing they will be staying in the best locations and the hotel will properly look after their specific needs.’
