Velo Essex to offer only partial refunds as sportive cancelled due to coronavirus

The closed road sportive will offer entrants a refund worth 45% of entry fee

The inaugural Velo Essex sportive has been cancelled as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and, unlike its sibling event Velo Midlands, is offering riders a partial refund.

The closed road sportive was due to take place in Chelmsford on Sunday 20th September but has been canned due to 'the latest government forecasts that indicate social distancing measures could be in place for the next six months'.

Earlier this month, event organiser Velo Series was under fire for failing to refund riders who had entered the cancelled Velo Midlands, claiming that no insurance policies 'cover the unprecedented circumstances' of coronavirus.

However, with its Velo Essex event, the company will be offering a refund - albeit only partial.

'Our rider Terms & Conditions do not require us to provide a refund under these special circumstances,' read organiser's cancellation the statement.

'However, having calculated the significant staffing, planning and marketing costs incurred over the last six months, we are able to refund 45% of your entry fee (merchandise and camping purchases will be refunded in full).

'You will receive a refund automatically which will be paid within the next 3-5 working days.'

While Velo Series, the company behind the event, is not concerned about the sportive day being affected, a lack of ticket sales and the inability to plan for the event has forced the decision.

'We were initially confident of selling the balance of entries over the coming summer months, however the escalating Covid-19 pandemic has meant we are unable to rely on these sales to cover the significant cost of staging this event,' read the statement, released on Tuesday.

'To compound matters, the important operational planning we should be undertaking is now severely compromised by the restrictions we are now all facing.'

This has also had a knock-on effect on whether the even can happen in 2021, with the statement continuing, 'the future of Velo Essex is currently very uncertain.'

This is yet another stroke of bad luck for the Velo Series sportive calendar that has now had to scrap three of its events.

In 2018, the Velo South sportive was cancelled due to Storm Bronagh.
