Team Ineos duo return to competitive racing for first time since Tour de France snub

Team Ineos duo Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome will return to racing for the first time since their Tour de France omission at Tirreno-Adriatico next week.

The Tour-winning duo will headline a stacked start list at the eight-day Italian stage race which begins on Monday 7th September, a list that also includes recent Il Lombardia winner Jakob Fuglsang of Astana and Trek-Segafredo's Vincenzo Nibali.

Both Thomas and Froome were left out of the Ineos Grenadiers team for the ongoing Tour de France due to lack of form and fitness.

Four-time Tour winner Froome will now focus on leading the team at the Vuelta a Espana, starting on 20th October, while Thomas will spearhead the team at the Giro d'Italia, which starts on 3rd October, using Tirreno as a major warm-up race.

The British duo will be supported by a strong team that includes time-trial World Champion Rohan Dennis, Eddie Dunbar, Filippo Ganna, Tao Geoghegan Hart and Salvatore Puccio.

Both Thomas and Froome have fared well at Tirreno-Adriatico in the past, finishing 3rd in 2018 and 2nd in 2013 respectively. However, their work will be cut out in 2020 due to an incredibly strong start list looking to prepare for the upcoming Giro.

Of note will be the in-form Astana duo of Fuglsang and Aleksandr Vlasoz, former Tirreno champion Nibali and Mitchelton-Scott's Simon Yates.

Beyond the home Team Ineos trio and Yates, the race will have a sizeable British contingent including Mark Cavendish (Bahrain-McLaren), James Knox (Deceuninck-QuickStep), Alex Dowsett (Israel Start-Up Nation) and Matt Holmes (Lotto Soudal).

Another name of note will be Alpecin-Fenix's Mathieu van der Poel who continues his preparation for the 'Spring' Classics, uniquely set to take place this year in October.
