Marc Hirschi, one of the breakthrough riders of 2020, mutually agreed termination of his contract with Team DSM

One of the breakthrough riders of the 2020 season, Marc Hirschi, has made a surprise and sudden exit from Team DSM.

The 22-year-old Swiss rider was still in contract with the Dutch team formerly known as Team Sunweb, however has reached a mutual agreement to terminate the deal early.

In a concise statement released on Tuesday afternoon, the team wrote: 'Team DSM has reached a settlement agreement with their rider Marc Hirschi to terminate their present employment before the original end date of 31st December 2021.

'It has been agreed that the agreement will be terminated with immediate effect and that no further comments will be made.

'Team DSM wishes Marc Hirschi all the best for the continuation of his career and expresses its gratitude for what Marc Hirschi has contributed to the team.'

No further comments were made and Hirchsi himself is yet to comment on why the partnership has come to such an abrupt end.

Hirschi found himself one of the riders of the season in 2020, winning Fleche Wallonne and a stage of the Tour de France. The former Under-23 World Champion also placed second at Liege-Bastogne-Liege and finished third at the elite men's World Championships road race.

Dutch science company DSM replaced travel agent Sunweb as the primary sponsor of the team on a deal that is set to support the men's and women's squads through to 2024.

The men's Sunweb team experienced a successful 2020 with three Tour stages, a Giro d'Italia stage and two riders on the podium at the Italian Grand Tour.
