George Bailey was given a new e-bike by Raleigh and Evans Cycles, giving him a 'new lease of life' and suspending retirement plans

One of the UK's oldest paperboys has put his retirement plans on hold after a new e-bike gives him a 'new lease of life'.

George Bailey, 80, became a local celebrity after making regional and national headlines as one of the country's oldest paperboys, braving his 2.5 mile route around Headcorn, Kent through the winter even on his 80th birthday.

After his story spread, Raleigh and Evans Cycles teamed up to gift Bailey a brand new Raleigh Motus Crossbar e-bike worth £1,900, putting thoughts of his retirement on ice.

Bailey said: 'I'm truly thrilled with my new Raleigh e-bike. After celebrating my 80th birthday I was seriously considering whether it was time to now "hang up my boots" and retire from the paper round.

'Knowing I can now continue doing what I love – with a little help from modern technology – is fantastic, especially on a Raleigh; a brand I've always admired growing up! I might even still be doing this when I'm 90.'

Raleigh's head of marketing, Michelle Jakeway said: 'When we heard George's story, we felt compelled to give him a little boost. The Raleigh Motus Crossbar is one of our most popular everyday e-bikes.

'Coming with a high powered Bosch motor, pannier racks and disc brakes, George can continue doing what he loves in comfort and spread the joy of cycling along the way.'
