Following two positive tests the Spanish team made the decision to pull out of the race, with all close contacts going into quarantine

Equipo Kern Pharma have withdrawn from the Volta a Catalunya before Stage 5 after two team members tested positive for Covid-19.

The Spanish ProTeam announced his morning that two tests taken as part of the health protocol for the race came back positive, with the team and sponsor, which is a pharmaceutical company, agreeing to pull out for the good of the race and wider society.

However the team would not confirm whether one or both of the positive cases were from riders, saying: 'At this point we are not disclosing that information in order to preserve the privacy of our team members.'

They have confirmed that the two members, as well as all close contacts, are now in quarantine.

'It is a hard choice, but also the most sensible one. It hurts to give up racing this Volta a Catalunya, but we prefer to be cautious and help keep the health of everyone, which is and remains our main priority,' explained Juanjo Oroz, Equipo Kern Pharma team manager.

'I'd like to thank all our riders, staffers and sponsors for their effort to observe and respect our health protocols. Luckily, we all are on good health and good spirits, and looking forward to resume racing as soon as it is possible and safe.'

There are still three stages to go in the Volta a Catalunya, with Ineos Grenadiers currently having a 1-2-3 in the GC through Adam Yates, Richie Porte and Geraint Thomas.
