Specialized releases S-Works Recon Lace gravel shoes

S-Works Recon Lace blends many of the same features from the standard Recon with a lace closure system

Specialized has released a laced version of its high end off-road shoe the S-Works Recon.

First launched in 2018, the Recon shoes essentially take the best parts of Specialized's top tier road shoes – lightweight, stiff carbon soles and firm foot hold – and makes them suitable for off-road use by making the upper more rugged and adding tread to the sole.

Now with the S-Works Recon Lace, riders have an updated version with much more aesthetically pleasing laces that will sit alongside the existing Boa S3 dial-equipped version of the shoes.

Amazing lace

The S-Works Recon Lace maintains many of the same features of the original Recon, including the full carbon sole that sits on top of Specialized arbitrary stiffness index with a 13.0 rating.

As well as that, they carry through Specialized's Body Geometry features too: the Varus Wedge, Longitudinal Arch and Metatarsal Button. Specialized says these features are important for optimal comfort and injury prevention.

The upper is changed in shape but not in material, being made from the same lightweight welded mesh and Dyneema upper that the brand says is supportive and protective yet comfortable and breathable.

Of course it's designed to brush off the challenges that off-road riding has to offer, with an external toe cap, a SlipNot rubber heel and toe tread, and the option to add replaceable toe spikes for adaptability over varying terrain.

The main story, though, is in the classic lace closure. Specialized explains, 'Lacing closures give riders multiple points of cincture to effect precise adjustment for a sublime feel right out of the box.

'We also removed any extraneous hardware from the upper to make the shoe supple and essentially create a hug for your feet.'

Show your colour

Another welcome addition for the S-Works Recon Lace is the colour choice, with four options: Black, which is mostly grey; Oak Green, which is similar to the colour in classic camouflage; Aloha, which is a loud pattern of blue, yellow, turquoise and black; and White which is, well, white.

It's slightly heavier than the Boa-equipped Recon, with a size 42 coming in at a claimed 280g, but it's also cheaper – emphasis on the 'er' – at £300.
