Canyon-Sram to be led by Hannah Barnes and Australian Tiffany Cromwell, supported by British clothing brand Rapha

Rapha has put its weight behind a new UCI Women’s WorldTour cycling team, Canyon-Sram Racing, in the wake of the brand’s separation from Team Sky. The new team is led by Briton Hannah Barnes, and Australian Tiffany Cromwell, amongst a very strong team roster. It is set to focus on races such as the Amgen Tour of California and Philadelphia Cycling Classic, the Aviva Women’s Tour, and La Course.

Barnes, the only Brit in an extremely diverse team line-up, has spent two years with United Healthcare in the US following a very successful domestic season in 2013. She was set to compete in the World Championships last year.

‘I broke my ankle in Colorado, so was at Richmond [for the World Championships], but not racing,’ says Barnes, ‘I have my sights set on racing at the Olympics.’ Australian rider and Tiffany Cromwell has sights similarly set on Olympic competition, in what appears to be a team-wide ambition to strengthen the Olympic campaign for the leading riders.

Accompanying Barnes and Cromwell on the team will be Lisa Brennauer, former World Championship Time Trial champion, as well as several other members of Women’s pro team Velocio-Sram.

Canyon - SRAM pro team

Headline sponsorship is split between Canyon and SRAM, with Rapha providing both racewear for competition and casual off the bike clothing from 2016 onwards. The team kit is yet to be revealed, but will be a high-performance range taking inspiration from the Souplesse collection. ‘We see this as a great opportunity for to gain the same Research and Development we achieved with Team Sky, but with our women’s range,’ says Sarah Clark, Chief Marketing Officer at Rapha. ‘We want to address what women want and need at the highest level.’

Canyon’s affiliation is the brand’s first serious step into the women’s pro peloton. The women’s team will be riding top tier Canyon Ultimate CF SLX and Speedmax TT bikes from the start of the season, equipped primarily with the new Sram Red eTap wireless electronic groupset.

The team will be on training camp in Majorca from December 8th to 20th 2016, and the team’s first full race will be Ladies Tour of Qatar on February 2-5.
