First look: Giro Cinder MIPS helmet

7 Feb 2017

An impressively well appointed MIPS helmet given the asking price

Giro’s Synthe helmet boasts great ventilation and aerodynamics, but its £225 pricetag puts it out of reach for many customers. The Cinder addresses this, offering many similar features to its range-topping brother but at a much more reasonable price.

‘The Synthe offers slightly better aerodynamics and ventilation but at a glance they’re pretty similar, which is what we were aiming for,’ says Scott Junker, helmet brand manager at Giro.

Unlike many helmets at this price point, the Cinder includes the MIPS protection system – in fact the helmet was designed around its inclusion to make sure it didn’t affect fit, which is a problem that has plagued many early adopters of the technology.

‘We focused on small details like this with the Cinder as we think they add up to much better day-to-day usability,’ says Junker.

The Cinder weighs in at 282g, meaning it cedes just 56g to the Synthe and is comparatively light against many MIPS-equipped competitors at a similar price point.

Verdict: An impressively well appointed MIPS helmet given the asking price.
