First look: FSA SL-K Supercompact chainset

Verdict:

A versatile super-compact chainset that's more than just smaller rings bolted onto a standard crankset

Price:
£414.95

Whether it’s tackling climbs on gravel, or hitting steep gradients on the road, there are times when using even a compact chainset can leave you wishing you had another gear or two.

That’s why FSA has released this chainset, which is available in ring configurations of 48/32 and 46/30, compared to the usual compact size of 50/34.

‘Recently we have noticed an increasing demand for this sort of ratio,’ says FSA’s Edoardo Girardi.

‘It’s very versatile and helps on steeper climbs both on and off-road, but also allows the rider to stay in the middle of their cassette for longer, improving chainline and thus efficiency.’

Built for purpose

This isn’t just smaller rings bolted into an existing SL-K crankset. The crank spider has been reworked with a 90mm bolt-circle diameter, so the smaller rings can be direct-mounted, similar to one-by systems.

Girardi claims this saves weight and improves the stiffness of the chainset, and he also claims FSA will not stop only at the SL-K tier: ‘We feel this is just the beginning of the trend and we are working to extend the range.’

Verdict: A versatile super-compact chainset that's more than just smaller rings bolted onto a standard crankset.
