Scitec 100% Whey Protein Professional is fundamentally a great product, but its price means there are other products for those on a budget

Cyclist Rating:
Mixes very well, tastes great, high quality

While the importance of protein intake in strength and power-based exercise has long been established, its necessity in the endurance athlete’s diet has only been recognised in the last few years.

Protein does the same job repairing muscles, making hormones and enzymes and supporting immune function regardless of whether you’ve just been for a ride or lifted some weights, so it is important to consume an adequate amount.

Individuals who regularly exercise have an increased need for protein so might want to consider supplementing the protein found in the whole foods they consume with whey powder.

Scitec isn’t a brand that specifically markets to cyclists so it isn’t as well known as brands like Science in Sport or Torq, but it claims to be one of the leading manufacturers of sports supplements in Europe and is a well-respected name in strength and power-based sports.

Easy mixer

The Scitec 100% Whey Protein Professional powder is one of its most popular products so it wasn’t surprising to find the powder was, in general, easy to get along with.

The powder mixes uncommonly well - after a few seconds of vigorous shaking in a protein shaker bottle there were no lumps and minimal froth, which are annoyances that plague a lot of other powders.

The Lemon Cheesecake flavour is one of a wide-range on offer by Scitec and it tastes great. It is as reminiscent of the real thing as you could expect, and sweet enough to be satisfying without being sickly.

Scitec recommend mixing a serving (30g) with 250ml of water but I took to using 500ml - even with double the advised water the taste isn’t really that diluted and it is more likely to benefit your hydration status.

I found a small niggle with the serving scoop - Scitec explain a serving is two thirds of one scoop but I couldn’t see why the brand didn’t just spec a smaller scoop.

For those who want a really clear idea of their nutrient intake, simply filling one whole scoop is a more accurate and repeatable way to dish out a serving than trying to judge fractions.

Once you’ve decided how much powder constitutes two thirds of a scoop, the serving you ingest seems pretty high quality.

Quality guarantees

Scitec boasts several quality guarantees to ensure the whey comes from premium sources, and for a basic whey product (there are more expensive high-protein products you can use, such as whey isolate) there is less fat and carbohydrate than powders from other brands - 100% Whey Protein Professional is just 6.7% fat and 4.7% carbohydrate.

That said there is less protein too: 73% compared to the 82% of a popular market alternative, MyProtein’s Impact Whey protein, which suggests quite a high proportion of flavouring.

That would support why it still tastes great with double the suggested amount of water, and isn’t an issue in terms of nutritional value, you just need to make the serving a little bigger.

Indeed, Scitec’s recommended serving is 30g compared to MyProtein’s 25g.

Nutritionally Scitec’s 100% Whey Protein Professional powder compares well to other comparable products but in terms of raw value it is a bit below par.

Still, it is a mix of whey concentrate and isolate (the purer form of whey), so although MyProtein offers whey concentrate for a lot cheaper (5kg in a similar flavour is £22 cheaper), Scitec’s 100% Whey Protein Professional powder should in theory be higher quality.

It does contain digestive enzymes too. Although research currently suggests their efficacy isn’t exactly unequivocal, it is a neat addition because if nothing else they won’t do you any harm and aren’t something offered in most brand’s whey products.

From the ease of mixing, to the flavour and overall quality, there is a lot to like in the Scitec 100% Whey Protein Professional powder.

If quality trumps budget for you and you can get over the curious scoop size I’d recommend giving it a go.
