First Look: Rapha Explore range

6 Mar 2018

As all-road grows so does Rapha with its latest range designed for exploring

The Rapha Explore range is the latest extension from the luxury British cycling apparel brand, aimed at the growing trend for adventuring far and wide on more than just the tarmac.

This latest range is designed for those who consider getting dressed for riding their bike to be about more than just aerodynamics and lightweight Lycra, expensive coffee shops and blisteringly fast chaingangs.

With its multi-pocket bibshorts and technical t-shirt, Rapha has targeted those who like to take their time and spend all day exploring the unknown.

Starting with the Rapha Cargo bibshorts, the design nods to bike-packing and touring alike aren't difficult to see. On either leg, Rapha has placed a sizeable pocket, big enough to fit energy gels, jam sandwiches or even a small flask of tea. Rapha also promises these items will not fall out while you ride.

Less visible but still noticeable are two pockets on the rear straps which while smaller will still comfortably store essentials.

While Rapha is far from the first, and it certainly won't be the last, to add pockets to bibshorts, its reasoning is clear when you see the companion technical t-shirt.

While fitted, it is not as figure-hugging as traditional Lycra and looks and feels like something you would more likely wear to the gym rather than on the bike. Again, this appeals to the exploring type who wants to remain comfortable in a loose-fitting top for many hours exploring in the saddle.

Along with the t-shirt, Rapha has also launched the options of a polo shirt for those who want to look a tad smarter on the bike and the Explore base layer, Rapha's first permanently antibacterial treated base layer.

Unfortunately, the 'beast from the east' prevented us from giving this a first ride last week as although the Cyclist team is tough we're not quite ready to head out in subzero temperatures wearing a t-shirt.

As can be expected with the addition of pockets, the Rapha Cargo bibshorts will come at some cost and are set to retail at £195. The technical t-shirt will come in at £55 with the polo shirt totalling £70.
