Sportful introduces intriguing updates to its AW18 range

The Italian brand has furnished its staple products with some smart new features

We’ve had a good run this summer, but the temperature finally seems to be tapering off and the nights are closing in. The latest kit from Sportful presents a compelling case for making sure the onset of autumn doesn’t have to mean the start of a long few months on the turbo though - it has updated several key pieces in its A/W catalogue with the aim of keeping you comfortable through the next couple of seasons.

The Sportful R&D Strato jacket was an innovative product last year. It was the first product to integrate the front half of a windproof gilet onto a long sleeve thermal jersey.

It was at its best in cool but dry conditions, so to make it more versatile this year Sportful has used its weatherproof No Rain fabric for the thermal jersey part of the garment and updated the gilet part to be water resistant, meaning it should work well in showery weather now as well.

The Cabrio jacket is a new product with a name and design inspired by the removable roof of a cabriolet car. It has the weatherproofing and insulation of a light jacket but includes a large removable back panel, which can be kept or taken off depending on weather conditions.

Going out for a ride with cooler and wetter conditions on the forecast? Keep the panel on to retain the most protection and insulation. Warmer weather on the horizon? Undo the zips either side and store the packable panel in a jacket pocket to expose a more breathable, light No Rain fabric.

The final feature to mention is a small but no less significant refinement on the Fiandre bottoms. The flap of extra material that was unstitched along its lower seam on previous generations of tights and shorts has been fully sewn on.

Purportedly it was like that to add extra protection in wet conditions but the feature garnered mixed feedback from users - what little benefit there may have been was usually outweighed but the annoyance of the flap catching on the rear of the saddle.

It was the only detractor on what was otherwise some truly accomplished winter wear and happily has been rectified in this latest iteration.

Winter may be coming, but if Sportful has anything to do with it you’ll be well prepared.
