With sunshine, quiet roads and on-hand bike experts, Club La Santa is a cyclist’s training paradise

Sunshine and cycling, the ultimate combination. But given that the UK doesn’t exactly fit this bill, where should amateur cyclists head to train?

Club La Santa, situated on the island of Lanzarote just off the coast of Africa, is a cycling training haven and serves up just the ticket.

The resort boasts outstanding cycling facilities, blue skies and empty roads, plus with plenty of other activities on offer, it is the world’s premier destination for amateur cyclists.

Performance cycling facilities

To start with, Club La Santa’s specialist team of bike fitters are on hand to help cyclists maximise their efficiency and pedal stroke, whilst staying injury-free.

‘Everyone knows about Lanzarote’s perfect roads and climate for winter training, but a Club La Santa bike fit is an essential part of any cycling holiday,’ explains Ben Price, Sports Performance Coach at Club La Santa.

‘From beginner to elite level, I can’t overstate the benefits. Improving your comfort in the saddle and the pressure on your arms, neck and back can boost your power and efficiency. A good bike fit can also make improvements to your strength in the pedal stroke, making you faster while staying injury-free.

‘We are incredibly proud of our facilities at Club La Santa and can’t wait to help you make those performance gains.’

The team use the latest bike fit technology, including 3D video analysis to compare pre- & post-bike fit positions, while the motion analyser, which incorporates body-specific data, joint freedom and muscular flexibility checks, further optimises bike position.

Shimano Dynamics Lab technology ensures the most exact real-time biometric analysis, and the real-time 3D pedalling analyser enables an in-depth assessment of performance.

All this is available in the resort’s All-Inclusive Performance Package, which offers a Static Bike Fit, Dynamic Bike Fit and Pedal Analysis to make sure you are in the optimal position to achieve your goals.

The expertise doesn’t stop there. The team also give recommendations on flexibility, mobility and strength, and offer bespoke training plans, whilst a doctor and physio are on hand if needed.

With an on-site bike workshop, premium bikes such as the Cannondale SuperSix Carbon Di2 available to hire, and a pro peloton bike service, the only thing for you to focus on is the road ahead.

A climate for cycling

Lanzarote benefits from year-round warm and dry weather, averaging just 18 days rainfall per year, making for far more reliable and cycle-friendly conditions than anywhere in the UK.

It is not just the sunshine that makes Lanzarote the place to cycle, however. The stunning volcanic landscape and lava fields, the lack of traffic and the abundance of undulating, smooth roads and testing climbs make for the ideal training environment.

For example, the 5.6km Femés climb offers up to 12% gradients, the iconic Tabayesco has a leg-firing ascent and hairpin bends, whilst the Mirador del Río offers unrivalled views.

Club La Santa provides routes for all levels, ranging from a 15km loop to Tinajo all the way up to the famous 180km Ironman route, which takes in 2,550m of climbing.

The resort also organises regular guided and group rides. These start at 20km, at an average speed of 18-20kmh, building up to Club La Santa’s Endurance Road Bike Tour, a 120km route taking in Lanzarote’s toughest climbs.

With its performance training centre and excellent cycling roads, it is no wonder Club La Santa is frequented by many of Europe’s top professional cyclists and triathletes, including Ironman 70.3 world champion Lucy Charles-Barclay.

Activities and more

And Club La Santa isn’t just for cycling. With 80 sports and 500 weekly activities on offer, from Pilates to tennis, HIIT workouts and swimming to name but a few, it is the ultimate playground for active people.

Boasting three 50m swimming pools, a lagoon, newly renovated tennis courts, a Conica CONIPUR Vmax 400m running track and a CrossFit area, you can improve performance both on and off the bike.

And for those after some relaxation, the resort’s four on-site restaurants offer a range of delicious Spanish and international food whilst the wellness centre and hairdresser are the perfect places to unwind.

Direct flights to Lanzarote are available from most major UK airports, taking just over four hours to get there, and Club La Santa is only 30 minutes from Lanzarote airport. Exchanging the UK drizzle for cycling in the sunshine doesn’t get any easier.
