Tour de France winning bikes: Jumbo-Visma's brand new Cervélo S5, plus R5 and P5

The Dutch team and their Cervélo bikes won six stages, three jerseys and the combativity award, and could've had more

What do you get when you cross the most talented cycling team of its generation with a fleet of very, very fast bikes? A winning formula.

Jumbo-Visma's all conquering band of Jonas Vingegaard, Wout van Aert, Christophe Laporte, Primož Roglič, Sepp Kuss, Steven Kruijswijk, Nathan Van Hooydonck and Tiesj Benoot were nothing short of spectacular at the 2022 Tour de France despite a few early departures.

They bagged themselves six stage victories, the yellow jersey, the green jersey, the polka dot jersey and the combativity award in a memorable display that's earned its place in the history books.

The lads weren't alone though, coming along for the ride was their selection of Cervélo bikes: the aero S5, the lightweight R5 and the time-trial P5.

And while the R5 and P5 were already on the market, the Cervélo S5 only launched this morning.

We got the all-important details on all of the Dutch super team's machines to show what it takes to win the world's best bike race.

Aero bike: Brand new Cervélo S5

Officially released only today, Jumbo-Visma have been riding the new Cervélo S5 aero road bike since February, so the enormous stack of victories on flatter stages since then have been on this bad boy.

Cervélo says this iteration is more aero and lighter than ever, with deeper frame tube sections that take advantage of the latest UCI rules, a simplified front-end and increased tyre clearance.

It's retained that split stem – though it's now a bit longer – but the system has undergone some tweaks to make it easier to install and adjust, and reduce its weight by a claimed 53g.

The new S5's deeper-profile aero tube shapes are fairly easy to spot in the head tube and bottom bracket areas, while longer trailing edges add to the bike's aerodynamics, adding surface area without too much of a weight penalty.

The new S5 has clearance for up to 34mm tyres, though you won't see tyres that wide in the pro peloton, and Jumbo-Visma team are sponsored by Shimano so theirs are kitted out with Dura-Ace wheels as opposed to the Reserve wheelset with which the bike is normally sold.

Ridden on stage wins for Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte, team sponsor Cervélo couldn't have wished for a better start to the life of this S5.

Paper thin aero profile.

Jumbo-Visma are, like many teams in the peloton, including Ineos Grenadiers and BikeExchange-Jayco, having to make do with the previous generation Shimano Dura-Ace R9100 cranks. This is, you won't be surprised to hear, to do with supply.

Cervélo uses a proprietary BBRight bottom bracket standard, which houses the bearings in a composite or aluminium cup, and you can just spot the red FSA cup hiding behind the crankset.

The team are sponsored by Garmin, so have Garmin computers as well as Tacx bottle cages and bidons.

Climbing bike: Cervélo R5

The fourth generation of the Cervélo R5 was launched last year, bagging a cool 4.5/5 rating in Cyclist web editor Matthew Loveridge's review.

With Jonas Vingegaard's success in the mountains – and impressive displays by his teammates including Van Aert – Jumbo-Visma's designated climber is clearly up for the task.

The Shimano Dura-Ace groupset and wheels are paired with the latest R5 frameset, which had its stiffness toned down from the previous version, however it's a claimed 130g lighter as well as being more aerodynamic than the old model.

Jumbo-Visma's setup does differ from the production build too, with an FSA bar and stem rather than Cervélo's in-house cockpit.

The R5 largely features much more classic-looking round tubes to keep weight to a minimum. Cyclist's test bike (size 54cm) hit the scales at 7.6kg, you'd imagine Jumbo-Visma might have made spec alterations to lower that further.

Cervélo lowered the seat cluster on this R5 to help add comfort, exposing more seatpost for greater flex.

The aesthetic of the yellow fork and tan-wall Vittoria Corsa tyres is excellent.

Time-trial bike: Cervélo P5

Second, seventh and eighth in the prologue; first and second in the final time-trial. It's safe to say the Cervélo P5 does its job.

Jumbo-Visma's superstar TT bike is kitted out with Reserve wheels alongside the Shimano Dura-Ace wheelset, Vision aero handlebar extensions and a Fizik Ares saddle.

The exaggerated tube shapes of the S5 are taken up another level on this bike, with slim, extra long profiles to cut through the air as smoothly as possible.

Slippery when Wout.

Shimano doesn't do disc wheels, so Jumbo-Visma ride wheels from Reserve, a brand founded by US bike maker Santa Cruz. Cervélo helps to develop the range and uses the wheels on all its top tier production models.

Time-trial bikes demand a chunkier saddle than most road bikes thanks to the aggressive riding position.
