Zipp 404 tubular receives the Firestrike treatment

The Zipp Firestrike range expanded to include the most advanced tubular rim ever created.

Eternal tinkerers Zipp have unveiled the 404 Firestrike Tubular as well as some updates to the 404 Firestrike clincher. With these new updates, Zipp are claiming that 404 Firestrike is the most advanced tubular wheel ever made.

First introduced a little over a year ago the Firestrike clincher was always meant to be a limited run (and the new one is too – they’re only releasing 404 sets), with the headline development being their Showstopper brake track surface. The Showstopper surface is a moulded-in brake track with a silicon carbide surface (like on drill bits) to give better and more consistent wet weather braking. In simple terms, the braking surface has small channels on it that take the water away rather than allowing it to bead.

We tested the old Firestrike clincher a little while ago and found that the new brake surface made a big difference to the quality of the braking. Peter said ‘in the dry it felt as effective as any aluminium braking surface I have ridden.’ The full review can be found here: Zipp 404 Firestrike Clincher review

The tubular version also brings a new feature that Zipp have dubbed the Carbon Shield. The carbon shield is a new way of laying the carbon into the surface of the rim to give the rim bed extra strength in the case of impacts. Zipp say that they gave prototypes of these new rims to some of their pro teams to test in 2013 by battering down the hardest cobbled sections of Paris-Roubaix with lower than usual tyre pressures. The rims remained undamaged so they have incorporated this technology into the new 404 tubular.

The clinchers also have minor updates in the hubs, and both models now ship with CeramicSpeed bearings, new Zipp Ti quick release skewers and the new Zipp – Silca rattle free valve extenders.
